For most of the past century, vegetable gardening advice has treated the soil as an inert medium — something to be amended, fed, and periodically sterilized. The mycorrhizal revolution quietly overturns that assumption, and the practical implications for a backyard bed in Zone 6 are larger than any fertilizer decision you'll make this year.
Mycorrhizal fungi form symbiotic relationships with roughly ninety percent of the plants we grow for food. The fungi extend a thread-like network — the mycorrhizal hyphal web — that effectively expands a root system's reach by a factor of ten to a hundred. In exchange, the plant shares the carbon it photosynthesizes. The arrangement is ancient, ecologically ancient, and yet most home gardens treat it as an afterthought.
In this long-read, we spent a full growing season tracking three raised beds at our Hood River reference garden: one tilled conventionally each spring, one no-till with a permanent wood-chip mulch, and one newly converted from lawn using the sheet-mulch method. We sent root-zone soil samples to an independent lab at month three and month six. The no-till bed showed mycorrhizal colonization rates roughly four times higher than the tilled bed — and the vegetable yields were not sacrificed. They were, in two of four crops, measurably higher.

Most of those products, in our testing, do not survive the trip from the package into a functioning soil ecosystem. A few genuinely do — and we'll name them.
